MSL NEWS: MSL Students and Faculty Celebrate Constitution Day at a Local School

Students from the Massachusetts School of Law organized and conducted a school-wide Constitution Day celebration for the students at the Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School in Haverhill. Constitution Day, which took place on Thursday, September 17, 2009, is a national annual celebration recognizing the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.

The activities included:

Opening remarks by the Honorable Stephen S. Abany, Presiding Justice of the Haverhill District Court;

A kid-friendly mock trial, where Silver Hill grade school students played various roles in the trial process, assisted by members of MSL’s award-winning mock trial team;

Constitution Day arts, crafts and stories for grades K-1, provided by members of MSL’s Student Bar Association and Black Law Students Association;

A first-grade recital of the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, complete with sign language presentations;

A second-grade and third-grade presentation and discussion of the “Five Freedoms” guaranteed in the First Amendment, organized by MSL’s student chapter of the American Constitution Society;

A school-wide assembly to celebrate the Constitution and learn about the right to vote.
